Settlement Canyon Irrigation

Settlement Canyon Irrigation Board of Directors thanks shareholders for their efforts in conserving water. Due to reservoir levels shareholders are asked to not water between Thursday 7 p.m. until Monday 7 a.m. Anyone watering during restricted hours may be subject to losing watering privileges. Food drop

The Utah Food Bank will hold the next drop on Friday, Aug. 6 at Deseret Peak Complex. Sign-ups will start at 7 a.m. and will continue until 10:30 a.m. or until all the food is distributed, whichever comes first. If we have to close sign-ups earlier than 10:30, all those already in line and signed up will be served. We keep a running tally of sign-ups to make sure we have enough so please come early. Remember, we volunteers have to get the site clean and cleared before we leave. Carpooling is encouraged, especially for those who have no other transportation. Food preserving workshop

Grantsville West Stake Center Pavilion at 115 W. Grantsville Irrigation

Grantsville Irrigation has issued a total of three regular turns to agricultural users. Metered users are allotted 250,000 gallons per share. If you exceed your allotment a penalty will be assessed based on the amount of overage. If you notice any leaks or abuse please contact the office at 884-3451.

Stansbury Park

Stansbury CERT

Stansbury Park CERT will have their first disaster simulation drill for all CERT trained citizens in Stansbury Park, Lake Point, and Erda on Aug. 7 at 9 a.m. at the Porter Way Church on 57 W. Water aerobics

The Stansbury Park Swimming Pool now offers water aerobics Monday and Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. It is $2.50 for Stansbury residents and $3.25 for non residents.

5K run

Stockton Days first 5K run will be Aug. 28. Sign in begins at 6:30 a.m., the run begins at 7 a.m. Run will conclude at Stockton Ball Park with a flag raising ceremony and annual fireman’s fundraiser breakfast. 5K run entry fee $15. Stockton Days will kick off Friday, Aug. 28 with a 5K Run/Walk and flag raising ceremony. Contact Lorri at 801-455-7674 to register. The family carnival begins at 10 a.m. The Little Mr. and Miss Stockton Pageant will begin at 1 p.m., followed by the traditional Bingo game at 3 p.m. Dance lesson, raffle drawing, auctions and potluck dinner will follow in the afternoon. CNJJHS registration

Seventh grade registration will be Aug. 10 in the cafeteria from 8 a.m. to noon and then from 2-5 p.m. Please bring proof of immunizations with you. Eighth grade registration will be Aug. 11 in the cafeteria from 8 a.m. until noon and 2-5 p.m. New student registration will be Aug. 12 for any student new to the district, it will go from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. This includes those who have attended another school during the past school year. Online registration is available beginning Aug. 3 at www.tooelesd.org click on “online registration” and print a copy, it will save you a lot of time waiting in a line, fees may also be paid online. (Seventh graders still must show proof of immunizations prior to the first day of school.) During registration, food service personnel will be available to provide assistance with school meal programs. Students may pay daily or in advance. There will be no charging of meals allowed. Free or reduced meal applications will be available at the time of registration. The first day of school is Aug. 24 and this year there will be no seventh grade orientation. Please note the new start and ending times for school have changed. School will begin at 8 a.m. and dismiss at 2:35 p.m. Back to school night will be Aug. 19 from 5-7 p.m.

THS girls soccer

Tooele High School girls soccer will be holding try-outs for the 2010 season Monday through Thursday, Aug. 2-5 from 8-10 a.m. at the high school. If you have played soccer in the past or have thought about playing soccer come give it a try.

SHS registration

Stansbury High School will be holding their registration on Aug. 10-13: freshmen/seniors Aug. 10, 8-11 a.m. and 1-4 p.m.; sophomores/juniors Aug. 11, 8-11 a.m. and 1-4 p.m.; all grades that can’t come when scheduled Aug. 12, 1-7 p.m.; new students (those transferring from other districts) Aug. 13, 8-11 a.m. and 1-4 p.m. No schedule changes will be made the week of registration. Changes can be made on Aug. 16, 17 and 20 from 8 a.m. to noon and 1-3 p.m. On Aug. 18 changes can be made from noon to 3 p.m.

SHS drama children’s workshop

The Stansbury High School drama program is holding a summer children’s workshop Aug. 2-13. The workshop will be split for children grades fifth and under which will be Aug. 2-6 and children grades 6-8 will be Aug. 9-13. Workshops will take place at SHS from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. with a recital for family the last day of classes. Cost is $75 which includes a daily snack and workshop T-shirt. Tooele Junior High School summer office hours 7 a.m. to noon Monday through Thursday. Closed on Fridays. Students who have not yet registered for the 2010-2011 school year, can call TJHS after Aug. 1. August registration dates are Aug. 11 for seventh graders and Aug. 12 for eighth graders. THS class of 2000 reunion

Welding class

Eagle Scout project

Tyler Behunin is collecting clothes for his Eagle Scout project. The clothes will go to The Rotary Childrens Health Connection to benefit children in our community. We will need mostly kids clothes but all sizes will be accepted. You may drop off your clean clothing in good condition at either Tooele Vision Center 300 S. Kicking Cancer’s Can

A 5K fun run, bake sale, raffle and activity day will be held Aug. 7 at Parker’s Park in Tooele to help Candice Heaps and her family. Candice, a mother of six, is battling Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. The event will start at 5 p.m. with a bake sale, BBQ, face painting and music. The 5K run will start at 8 p.m. Pre-registration is on-going until July 30 which can be done online at kickingcancerscan.blogspot.com, in person at Macey’s Food & Drug or by mail (cash or check only) to Kicking Cancer’s Can, 1365 Berra Blvd., Tooele, UT 84074. Harmony Hospice

Harmony Hospice is looking for volunteers. Your time can make a difference in someone’s life. Variety of services needed: lawn care, patient visiting. Time needed on Sunday for a family for church services. Also veterans are wanted for veteran patients. Please call Coy at 435-830-2674.

CASA volunteers

Court appointed special advocate (CASA) volunteers are needed to be an advocate for abused and neglected children assisting as the guardian ad Litem attorney who represents the child’s best interest. No special education or background is necessary. Volunteers are needed for one year to visit with the child at least twice a month for a total of six to eight hours a month. Volunteers must be 21 years or older, pass a BCI and child abuse registry screening and complete training. For more information please contact Mary Lucero at maryal@email.utcourts.gov.

Food pantry

The First Baptist Church in Tooele is offering an emergency food pantry and clothing closet to meet the needs of our community. Anyone with clothing needs is welcome. The food pantry is available for emergency needs. Hours of operation are Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon. We are located at 580 S. Main Street, Tooele. For more information call 882-2048.

Volunteer opportunity

Rocky Mountain Care Foundation, a nonprofit organization is looking for volunteers in Tooele. Our volunteers provide respite care, friendly visits, conversation, light household chores, and other needs to terminally ill patients who are on our hospice services. Moose Lodge

Poker run

The Moose Lodge will be sponsoring a poker run on Aug. 21. Proceeds to benefit Arden Allred, husband of Linda Young, who is suffering from cancer. $50 donation to enter. Star party

The Salt Lake Astronomical Society invites you to join us at a free public star party Saturday, July 31 at the Stansbury Park Observatory Complex starting at dusk until 11 p.m., weather permitting. Enjoy views of the planets, stars, nebulae and galaxies through some Utah’s largest telescopes. Handicap accessible telescope will be available.

Special Olympics

Tooele County Giants, our local Special Olympics Team, is starting practice for their upcoming competitions. We will practice swimming at Pratt Aquatic every Saturday at 10:30 a.m. starting July 31. We will practice bocce every Monday at 6 p.m. starting Aug. 2. Bocce practice is held at the new fire station in Grantsville. Cub Scout Leader Roundtable

The heat is on and so is Cub Scout Leader Roundtable. Thursday, Aug. 5, 7:30 p.m. Cub Scout Roundtable staff will be at the Tooele Wigwam. Diagnostic clinic

The Diagnostic Clinic is held every Wednesday from 3-6 p.m. at 151 N. Main St. in the Extension Service Library. It is open to the public and will run until the end of September. Anyone having a problem with something growing on their property is welcome. If possible, bring in a small cutting or collect a sampling of what is growing which will aid in diagnosing the problem. The Tooele County Master Gardeners have a number of volunteers available to give presentations on a variety of garden topics. Relay for Life

Tooele County Relay for Life is looking for more teams to participate in this life-changing event. The event will begin on Aug. 13 at 5 p.m. and end on Aug. 14 at 1 p.m. at the Deseret Peak Complex Soccer Field. There will be food and entertainment for the entire family. The Tooele area Freemasons host two monthly meet-up groups for those interested in learning more about Freemasonry and its principles. Alzheimer’s caregivers

A support group for Alzheimer’s caregivers is open to anyone caring for someone with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia (memory issues). Safe driving class

AARP safe driving class sponsored by Mountain West Medical Center Senior Circle will be held on Friday, July 30 at MWMC. The class will run from 9-11:30 a.m. Lunch 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., furnished by MWMC Senior Circle. Class resumes from 12:30-2:30 p.m. Cost is $14 with a certificate issued at the end of the class that may get you a discount on your insurance for three years. Tooele County Aging has openings in an alternative, income-based program designed to help seniors remain independent. CNAs help keep them in their homes safely, provide personal care, do house keeping and run errands. If interested please contact Jolene Shields at 843-4104 or 4105.

Tooele seniors
