Fast electric car

Miller Motorsports Park is not unaccustomed to seeing sleek, fast, state-of-the-art racing vehicles on its tarmac. However, the vehicle that will take to the track today may be the fastest — and the quietest — to date. The Ira Fulton College of Engineering and Technology at Brigham Young University has prepared a unique entry for the Bonneville Salt Flats this season. Four and one half years of student effort have resulted in a lightweight, battery-powered streamliner capable of 180 mph. It will be tested at Miller Motorsports Park from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. today. The public is invited to come out and observe the test at no cost.

American LeMans

Klaus Graf, Greg Pickett and Muscle Milk Team CytoSport earned their first overall victory in the American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patrón with a stunning victory Saturday in the American Le Mans Northeast Grand Prix. Graf outdueled Patrón Highcroft Racing’s David Brabham in the final half-hour that saw the PHR HPD ARX-01c pushed off track as the two leaders went past the start-finish line in heavy traffic. The Porsche RS Spyder received a stop-and-go penalty but Brabham’s car had a punctured right-rear tire that forced a late pit stop. Graf took the checkered flag by 27.81 seconds for the team’s second victory of the year. Pickett, Graf and Sascha Maassen were LMP2 winners at the season-opening Sebring race. Brabham retains his American Le Mans Series LMP class championship lead after a puncture approaching the final 10 minutes of round five racing action ruined his race-winning chances at Lime Rock Park. He secured yet another podium finish and second overall for Patrón Highcroft Racing at the team’s home track near Lakeville, Conn. The result also recorded Brabham’s 56th top three Series finish to hold a seven point advantage over Graf in the LMP title fight.
